By saying that living Sisira Senaratna is dead before any confirmation by the National television, the Rupavahini in last morning hourly news at 11.00 a.m. had made the whole nation to be shaken in grief. The fake information to be corrected the National Television of the country took so many hours.
The fake news which spread like wild fire was not rectified to be heard or seen for a number of hours. It was finally announced after a number of hours that it was announced as a fake news in Government and Private radio channels.
It is reliably learnt that this fake news had been received via a SMS to the National TV news channel, the Rupavahini. The fake news was immediately telecast without obtaining any confirmation.
In today’s newspapers the Director General of the Rupavahini Corporation Mohan Samaranayake had aired his views about this ‘blemish’ had ordered for a corporate investigation.
The Senaratna duo had not been at home when telephone calls had been pouring in, but had been at a studio having rehearsals for a show that the duo are planning to perform for a joint concert to be held shortly. Later on they had made enquiries from artistes in the news division of the National television, the ’Rupavahini’. They had not revealed the names of the artistes.
As the country’s National television to telecast fake information without obtaining any confirmation is a serious matter and is of grave concern. It is detrimental and very embarrassing to the person of the calibre of Sisira Senaratna who is a very popular and award winning singer highly acclaimed and hailed for over 6 decades.
The other concern is that the country’s National television was reluctant to rectify the fake and harmful news that was telecast.
Finally it took them several hours to disclose about this fake news item until the evening 8 o’clock news bulletin. They covering themselves tactfully said that the Senaratna duo is rehearsing for a musical concert ignoring the blemish and blunder they made earlier. Then it was told “ that a fake news was telecast about Sisira Senaratna in the hourly news at 11.00 a.m. which had spread like wild fire. The National television, ’Rupavahini’ had taken steps to rectify the mistake”.
Henceforth the duo had made a statement that it was due to mistake of a fake ‘sms’ information which was incorrect and quietly wound up the fake news.
