LOTUS TOWER IN COLOMBO

South Asia’s tallest Nelum Tower to be erected in Colombo 
with rotating restaurants, Wedding halls, Theatres, Reception halls, TV, Radio communication channels towers.

Similar to the “EIFFEL” tower in Paris and Canada’s “CN” tower, a beautiful tall tower, which is supposed to be the tallest in South Asia is to be built in Sri Lanka very shortly. It is to be erected near the D.R.Wijewardena Mawatha close to the Postal Department Head Quarters adjacent to the Beira Lake at a slightly elevated location.
The intention of erecting this is primarily to attract tourists and to install innovative telecommunication systems, for both TV and Radio channels and for entertainment purposes. The laying of the foundation stone was ceremonially laid yesterday the 20th.The expenses are from the aid to be received by the Chinese Government.  
The Lotus Tower had been designed by a group of three Professors, Nimal de Silva, Samitha Manawadu and Chithra Wedikkara attached to the University of Moratuwa. The project duration is 2,1/2 years and is due to be completed in mid 2014.The height of the Lotus Tower is 350 metres.  After its completion it is to be used for various purposes. The Telecommunication Regulatory commission will monitor the construction activities of the top most portions.
A antenna with multi- purpose functions would be erected on top and would facilitate in telecommunications networks, TV and Radio channels. This Antenna would enhance to uplift the present functions of about 50 Telecommunication, TV and radio broadcasting functions. Most of the Telecommunication towers which serve at present fixed at random points would be removed and the functions diverted to the Antenna fixed at the pinnacle. It is proposed to erect the tower with 4 storeys. It is proposed to build a performing arts theatre, and a museum.
Above these storeys the 335 metre long Lotus Tower is to be constructed would be built on 4 strong concrete for 8 more storeys. All necessary cable would be sent through these concrete pillars up to the pinnacle. Within them will be large reception halls, conference halls, performing theatre and rotating restaurant which could accommodate 600 guests. The guests and foreigners could get a clear view of the Colombo city while dinning. During a period of 1 ½ hours it is due to rotate once. A total number amounting to 1000 guests could view the gorgeous Colombo city seated on completion.
The reception halls could be utilized for wedding functions and other functions as seminars etc. When completed it would be 350 metres in height. Once completed it would be the 19th tallest tower in the world. Tokyo’s ‘SKY TREE’ is the tallest tower in the world is 634 metres in height. The largest in South Asia presently is India’s Rameshwaran TV tower which is 323 metres in height.
